Aldnoah.Zero 2nd Season took place 19 months after the 1st season finale, that killfest, exactly. You know what happened after that? No one died, not Inaho, not the count, nor the princess herself. not.even.one. It baffled me how the director pulled such a stunt like that. That thick plot armor served as an omen as how this season would be done, but we'll save that for later. Now's for my opinions,
The Good
Character Development
There is a good thing that the character being revived by such convenient twist, namely how they developed after being put in near death experience, especially Inaho. For better or worse, Inaho has definitely changed, he wasn't so stoic anymore, you could see how his smile counter increased compared to previous season. Another one was Slaine. Sure, he wasn't put in near-death experience like the other two main casts -well, he was the one who shot Inaho and Saazbaum afterall. Gone is the day when Slaine was the chew toy. This season's Slaine even outwitted his higher ups, and rose all the way to the top of Vers' command chain. Boy, am I amazed! Pity that he aborted his seemingly heroic dying alone action to engage with the rival of petty reason in the end. The Asseylum hime-tenka though, after being suspended in regeneration tank for half of the season, went with a bang and NTR-ing both Inaho and Slaine with a character that appeared just 3 eps before finale, she really is something. Other than those three, another interesting, and relatable, character is the newly introduced Princess Lemrina.
Mecha Battle
One must not forget that this series is a mecha-genre anime before anything else, so it's important that the mechas (here they are called Kataphraktos) and their battles have to be good, fluid, and detailed . I'm glad it still retained the quality it has in the first season, if not slightly better. The last battle in the space was really good, I'm satisfied.
Soundtracks
The sound department of this series is still superb, it's one of the main strength of this series even. Those inserts they put really build up the mood. Unfortunately Opening (&Z) and Ending (GENESIS) songs are quite weak when you compared them to previous OP and ED. It's not that bad, but yeah, it's just not as good. But they used Kalafina's Heavenly Blue in the last episode so I got that goin' for me, which is nice.
The Bad
Stygis Platoons
I really pity these platoons, like, really. They couldn't even land a single hit and destroy the terran kataphrakt. Correct me if I'm wrong, but not until the 11th episode that one of them could destroy Terran's kat, with a suicide attack no less! The following episode they got better, destroying two kats using missiles. ...wait, they have missiles? why don't they use it earlier?? And those rain of missiles only hit two targets?? These platoons, kids, are the very textbook examples of how cannon fodders usually be.
Overpowered Protagonist, Dumb Enemies of The Week
Okay, one of Aldnoah.Zero appeal to me is watching how less-advantaged side could destroy opponents whose technlogy is more advanced by leaps and bounds. But in this season, the protagonist got (implanted) such ridiculously high-tech item that enabled him to be a walking supercomputer. Measuring distance? Check. Doing complex calculation on the fly? Check. Doing quantitative land surface analysis? Check. Built-in altimeter and VOR receiver? Check. Ability to command hundreds of mecha simultaneously? Check. Assuming control of thoughts, cognizance, and speech capabilites should its user collapse? Check. Holy shit! What the Hell, Hero??
No wonder a teenager could regularly destroy top brass mechas, even when they were cooperating with each other. Though I'm not really sure if it's because of him or due to his enemies stupidity. Take example the kage bunshin kataphrakt, a kat so advanced it can multiply itself through quantum teleportation. Each one of them is a real kataphrakt (no fake clone) and is individually controlled by its user. How it (they?) took part in battle? Rushing toward the enemies without reserving even one single clone in a safe place just in case. Another case is the aforementioned Stygis "always miss" Platoon. But the most common example of utter stupidity those counts always employ is that They Never Use Any Armament From Their Gargantuan Landing Castle Even If It Is Right Behind Them! Goddammit! The landing castle, at the very least, has shitload of missiles, shown when Vers was destroying UFE's submarine communication cables. This madness became all the more hillarious when Inaho and co flew using transport plane in the middle of battle with three counts and none of the counts bother to shot down the plane using their respective landing castles, resulting in three of them killed in action. Guess they deserved it.
Bulletproof Plot Armor
Back in the 1st season, after friend of the main cast died in no more than first two episodes, I wondered how many character will kick the bucket next. I couldn't be more wrong. Until the very end, not even one of Deucalion crew bite the dust. The setting is war, and they are actively participating in it, yet no one dies, really now. Maybe this is largely thanks to incompetency of Vers soldiers, but still..
Mazuurek
It's just a little flaw, but Mazuurek's slippery really irks me. How he can come and go as he like. When he was jailed, he could escape from the prison quite easily. Well, he was with Inaho at that time, but, how did Inaho hide him? Was there no inspection at all when they left the prison riding a utility vehicle? Even if the prison alarm had gone off?
Another occasion was when he visited the princess in Slaine's new landing castle. He could come and go without the owner of the castle know about it. Security, where??
Conclusion
Aldnoah.Zero 2nd Season adds a new twist to already twisted 1st season. There are some that liken this show akin to a tornado, twisting until it amount to nothing. lol, really. It's a good series, fair enough, but with its glaring flaws, it's far from being an excellent one. Mind you, I am being generous here. If you want to watch mecha battles accompanied by remarkable soundtracks, you're welcome to watch. Other than that, proceed at your own risk.
